Class of 1973

Pocahontas High School, Class of 1973, will always be embedded in my memory forever, and I hope everyone else’s too.   We had a wonderful school institution which catered to all our successful lifestyles we are now enjoying in our late years.  My fondest memory I look back on was the pep rallies held in the auditorium and then often continued even after school in the gym or up on the football field, and one a homecoming, took us to the streets of Pocahontas from the high school to town and back. The excitement each of us had was unforgettable and I can say honestly, I miss that. I’d like to add that I enjoyed the bus ride to school, study hall, lunch and football or basketball practice.  What better way than now and using this forum can we express our sincere gratitude and thanks for the quality education we received from the finest teachers of Pocahontas High School in 1973. I think now is most appropriate to say thank you to our principle’s, coaches and teacher’s who ensured we had the best possible education opportunity possible.  Thank you:  Bill Stone, Betsy Walker, Gaza Kovach, Mrs. Louise Blizzard-whom I might add, we dedicated our year book too in 1973, our coaches: Mr. Donald L. Perfin, Mr. Bill Burnett, Mr. Garland Roberts, and Mr. Larry Ellis, our teachers: Mrs. S. Trent, Mrs. H. Haga, Mrs. B.Wyrick, Mrs. A. Rowden, Mrs. C. Boone, Mr. E. Erskin III, Mr. B. Wright, Mrs. V Lubliner, Mrs. D. Price, Mrs. M. Kovach, Mrs. L. Trigg, Mrs. J. Fleming, Mrs. N. Lotito, Mrs. Harmon, Mr. H Estridge, Mrs. R. Haun, Mrs. B Gentry, Mrs. A. Neece and Mrs. B Dougherty. 1973 was truly the “Best” and most fun year and one that will be never forgotten.  My special thanks to Mr. Larry Kenneth Dillon, my best friend, and our editor of the Class Yearbook of 1973.  His leadership, commitment and dedication throughout the years have led to several successful class reunions since graduation.  Hey, Larry lets have one more!  One more for the Gipper!
Larry Dillon

Class of 1973

My name is Larry Dillon. I graduated in 1973. My most fond memory of Pocahontas High School was being on the 1972 Basketball Team that beat Graham to win the Tazewell County Basketball Championship. Coach Burnette was a great coach then. Also we beat Bramwell High School that year which also was a big highlight. We went on to District and barely lost in the 2nd round in District play.  Another fond memory for me was being the Editor of the High School Yearbook and working with great friends like Marcia Dinkins (Thompson), Patty Hylton (Dameron), Peggy Salyers (Scarberry), Jerry Sinkfork, Tommy Howell, Vicki Sarver, etc.  All were great friends even today.  Lastly, another great memory was going in the Air Force together with Kenny Gibson.  He was and has always been a great friend. We shared many experiences together in the Air Force, especially in Basic Training and Tech School. He contributed to our last H.S. reunion in 2003 with a wonderful Pocahontas coin he had made in Korean and brought in so everyone in our graduating class could have this commemorative coin Celebrating our “30th” High School Reunion. Our last reunion was great!

Class of 1959

The Carnival Cruise was above and beyond any expectations that anyone of us may have had.  From my brother Robert Mathena and I a heart-felt thanks to Jan and anyone else that helped with this cruise. Our relationship is now more than that of just school chums. There is a deep friendship that draws us even closer. I have some getting even with a certain person, and he knows whom he is. This is an all in fun getting even. Once again, WE HAD A BALL.  Wish you all could have been there. When are we going again??  IN A WHILE!!!!!! ---Barbara Shrader

Voice of the Indians for 26 years

In the middle of the 50's, I lived in Pocahontas at 27 Water Street.  In the winter time, snow heavy, school closed,  the town would allow us to sleigh ride from the top of Water St. to the center of town, over the bridge or up on Center Street.  We would have a fire and most times someone would make hot cocoa.  Every child in the town would more than likely be there.  In the summer, it would not be a good weekend if we had not went to the drugstore, listen to the jukebox and sip on fresh made cherry or vanilla coke.  Ah, the memories of the past.  Remember the movie theater.   A quarter would get you in, a bag of popcorn and a drink.  I always took some little old lady's quarter, bought the ticket, brought her stub so that she would have a chance for the money drawing.  Most older folk didn't want anyone to know of the gambling habit on Saturday,  which was okay by me.  Merry Christmas to all.

I would like to know if there if anyone who has or knows anyone who has a photo of the old school house that was up on the hill in Boissevain, Va. It was the Elementary School. The classes were from the first grade to the 7th grade. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for all of your hard work in order to keep our memories of our youth alive.  We grow old too soon and memories help keep our minds young and alive.  Those days were happy days even though we struggled at times.  Those struggles helped prepare us for our future.  Thank you so mush for all of the time you have spent to make our reunions very enjoyable!
